History

clinic1 Phangan animal care was founded in September 2001 by Shevaun Gallwey with the help of a few long term residents on the island.
With an enormous amount of work, and assistance of the Animals Asia Foundation (AAF), PhaNgan Animal Care (PAC) was born. PAC is a non-profit organisation, developed to provide essential care for the many ill and suffering stray animals of Koh PhaNgan.
It has been gratefully embraced by the local residents of the island, as there was no option to obtain treatment unless the animal was brought to the adjacent island which often was not possible. PAC began based in a small building behind the main high school on the island, then moved to its current premises in Wok Tum in May 2008.

How it all began !

Shevaun with 'Smudge'

I have always been saddened to see the condition of Thailand’s many beach dogs when holidaying there, and even more frustrated, as a veterinarian, not to be able to help them through lack of equipment. So, when embarking on a 3-month visit to Thailand, I borrowed equipment and medicines from the Dog Rescue Centre Samui, and brought them to the nearby island of Koh PhaNgan. With the assistance of long term resident, Heidi Farmer, I carried out free neuterings, vaccinations and skin and wound treatments around the island. The work that I carried out was so gratefully received, that I decided to try to provide some more permanent care on this island.

With an enormous amount of work, the assistance of the Animals Asia Foundation (AAF), and working in conjunction with the Dog Rescue Center Samui (DRCS), PhaNgan Animal Care (PAC) has been born. PAC is a non-profit organisation, developed to provide essential care for the many ill and suffering stray animals of Koh PhaNgan. It has been gratefully embraced by the local residents of the island, as there has never been any option to obtain treatment unless the animal was brought to the adjacent island. The incredibly long hours, low wages and continuous work of an islander meant that it was always very difficult to find facilities, time, finances and manpower to undertake such a journey. Instead, Heidi would help out as best she could, taking detailed advice from Dr Somsak on Koh Samui, or the animal would remain untreated, allowing the condition to accelerate rapidly, resulting in either extreme suffering, or, death.
