Education

Continuing Education is a vital part of PAC. There are several areas where PAC concentrates on education:

Nursing education
All nurses are trained and provided with pratical protocols for defining illnesses and injuries and providing the best symptomatic treatment

Nursing training
Por, PAC’s Head Nurse, has been trained by Shevaun – through the course of their training, Shevaun has researched and composed educational material to cover the most vital aspects of veterinary nursing and hopes to expand this composition in the future

Education of school children
Since 2004, PAC has been included in the annual curriculum of the island’s only highschool. We teach one class a week for one semester per year, teaching respect and understanding for animals. We have an option to teach for 2 semesters if we have enough teaching material. In January 2007, Shevaun presented a workshop at the 4th Asia For Animal conference in Chennai, India, outlining the practicalities of establishing an education programme. Data analysis
As our records are computerised, we can analyse these records to investigate our impact on the local population. For example, in Year 1, PAC gave 132 chemotherapy treatments to dogs with Transmissible Venereal Tumour (TVT); in Year 5, we gave 3 treatments. Neutering and chemotherapy have therefore virtually eradicated TVTs from Koh PhaNgan. Further results will be posted as they become available.
